Beginner Dog Grooming Scissor Set
Does this sound familiar?
- Hair over the eyes, so the dog looks out through a fringe
- A beard that goes in the water bowl and comes out dripping
- Hair growing over the top of the feet and out between the toes
- Six weeks between grooms, and a scruffy dog by week three
- A pair of kitchen scissors in the drawer that you have thought about using
This is a finishing set: face, feet and the sanitary area, tidied between grooms. Use a machine for a full body clip, and keep scissors away from mats.
Four pieces, in the order to use them
- Curved scissors: start here. The safest piece for feet, muzzle and bottom
- Steel comb: the safety barrier. Slide it flat between coat and skin and cut against the comb
- Straight scissors: for straight lines and tidying a beard
- Thinning scissors: for blending edges. The piece that needs most care
- Stainless steel with rounded tips
Oil is not included. See Clipper Oil.
We do not offer a left-handed set yet.
What rounded tips do
A rounded tip stops a point going into an eye or an ear. Behind the ball there is still a cutting edge, and it cuts skin as readily as hair. Keep the comb between the blade and the dog.
The comb test, before every cut
Run the comb down to the skin. If it passes, you can trim. If it will not pass, that is a mat and the scissors stay shut.
Dog skin moves under very little pressure and gets pulled up into a mat, so a blade slid underneath cuts skin instead of hair. Groomers call mat cutting one of the most common causes of the wounds they see. Mats are a job for the Dog Clipper Pro or for a groomer.
Where it goes wrong
Go slowly around ear leather, armpits, eyelids, nipples, the sanitary area, the webbing between the toes and the loose skin of the flank. Feel for warts, moles and scabs first. Older dogs have thinner skin.
If you do cut your dog
Stop. Press a clean cloth on it. A small nick usually settles with styptic powder or cornflour. See a vet the same day if the wound gapes, if bleeding has not stopped after a few minutes, if it is on an eyelid or ear margin, or if the dog is in pain.
The tidy-up routine
Comb the coat through first. Trim the feet and face with the 2in1 Paw Clipper if you want it fast, then finish the edges by hand. Wipe the blades dry and oil the screw. Ten minutes once a week keeps the dog looking groomed right up to the next appointment.
